Sibyl Trelawney

Position: Divination Professor

The great-great-great-granddaughter of the legendary seer Cassandra Trelawney, Sybil became the first in her line to truly inherit the family gift - albeit in a rather peculiar form. Her prophecies are rare, sudden, and seem to depend too heavily on the seer’s emotional state. Sibyl’s gift remains extremely unstable: no one has yet been able to understand what exactly allows her to enter the state necessary for a true prophecy. Whenever asked what precedes her visions, Sibyl looks away sheepishly, blushes instantly, and tries to change the subject as quickly as possible. The constant mockery and skepticism of those around her have made Sybil withdrawn and shy. Nevertheless, to the considerable surprise of many, Professor Dumbledore entrusted her with teaching Divination almost without hesitation, mysteriously remarking that Sybil “only needs to find someone who will offer her a helping hand.”
